The patent-pending Beauty Spoon® is a cosmetic tool with an ergonomic handle and flexible stem making it easy to retrieve every ounce of liquid and cream (that can't be retrieved otherwise) located at the bottom of product bottles and containers. The Beauty Spoon® also comes equipped with a contoured spoon for retaining and scooping out as much liquid as possible.

The Beauty Spoon was created because I needed it. I bought an expensive serum and was determined to use every ounce of remaining product, even though the pump had stopped dispensing the serum. When I was nearing the end of the product, I noticed that I couldn’t retrieve the remaining liquid due to the design of the product bottle. This was not the first time that I experienced this problem. I tried different ways to remove the liquid with no luck. In that moment of frustration, the Beauty Spoon was born! The name and slogan “If you can’t get to, Beauty Spoon it!” followed shortly after.

The Beauty Spoon® was born because I really needed it! But I had no idea how much fun I would have using it. Not only am I saving money but it also feels great knowing I am now able to use 100% of my products.

The MedFolio Electronic Pillbox was designed and developed by a pharmacist.  It is built off of the basic “old-fashioned” pill box design, since that is a proven way to effectively organize and store medications for daily use.  The pillbox holds seven days worth of medications with four separate dosing compartments per day (morning, noon, evening, and bed).  The compartments are deeper and bigger than typical pillboxes you can buy in retail pharmacies, and each compartment has an internal basket so patients, even those suffering from arthritis, can easily remove the medications from the pillbox to the palm of their hand.  The pillbox comes with an easy to use Windows-based software program so that users can schedule the pillbox to their personal medication regimen.  The pillbox only needs to be connected to the computer upon initial setup or if any medication regimens change at a later date.  Otherwise the pillbox does not need to be connected to a computer, phone line, or wall outlet in order to operate.  Depending on the dosing schedule entered into the software program, a triad of alerts is initiated in order to help remind patients to take the “right dose at the right time”.  At each scheduled dose, there is a visual lighting system that directs the patient to the actual compartment that contains their medication for the next dose, and there is an audio alert that beeps every 2-3 seconds until the patient takes their medication.  If users are on the go, the daily pillbox storage bins are removable so that patients can take their medications with them and receive medication reminders by e-mail or text message since they may not be around the device for the lighting and audio reminder alerts.  Unlike any other medication management device on the market today, the lid of the MedFolio Pillbox has a unique built-in medication identification window so that sample pills are displayed next to the name, dose, and indication of each respective medication.  This tool helps to improve the communication between the patient, caregivers, family members, and healthcare providers so that everyone is attuned with the medication utilization at home.  The MedFolio Electronic Pillbox comes with a carry case to easily transport the device to medical visits and travel excursions.  Best of all, it is Made in the USA.

When I worked for VA Palo Alto Healthcare System, I developed a passion for helping patients manage their medications on a day-to-day basis….from helping them to organize their pills, moving through their life with their medications rather than becoming burdened by them, remembering to take them on time, and assisting them in ways to easily communicate to other healthcare providers what they are taking at home.  There was one patient in particular who started me on the path of thinking that their needs to be a device on the market that focuses on ALL of the major difficulties patients face with their medications.  She was a World War II nurse who lived alone in California and all of her relatives were on the East Coast.  Her physician referred her to me because he could not get a good sense of what medications she was taking at home, and he knew that she was seeing other healthcare providers at Kaiser.  Her family members on the East Coast were contemplating of whether they should put her into an assisted living home.  She was instructed to bring all of her medications from home to the visit.  It was evident after several visits that she was very good at remembering to take her medications and she just followed how to take them based on what was written on the prescription labels.  Unfortunately, she basically became a shut-in because she was always waiting at home for the next dose due to the fact that she could not take her 15 individual pill bottles with her on all her errands.  Also, she was unable to remember all the “foreign sounding” brand and generic drug names and rather just knew her pills by shapes and colors…..this prompted her physicians to think she was continually confused!  What I did was I set her up with a pillbox and taught her how to fill it every week, which she did with great accuracy.  The pillbox also allowed her to carry her daily medications with her on errands and daily activities, thus getting her out of the house.  Lastly, I took a sheet of paper and taped sample pills in the margin.  Next to the pills, I wrote the corresponding brand and generic drug names, the dose, how many times she took it per day, and the indication.  I told her to take the sheet of paper to every medical visit she went to so that every healthcare provider was well aware of what was happening at home on the medication front.  Not long after that, she no longer needed my services as she was fully capable of using these tools to improve her medication adherence, and her kids on the East Coast were truly appreciative.  Similar types of visits with other patients prompted me to develop the idea of a medication management system that incorporates all of these tools into one device.  However, it had to be easy to use, portable, compatible with the fast-paced lifestyle of the 21st century, and directed towards all age groups rather than just the elderly.

Inventor: Julie Fulmer-Mason

Julie Fulmer-Mason is the inventor of the MedFolio Electronic Pillbox.  She is a pharmacist and graduated from the University of California, San Francisco School of Pharmacy in 1998.  From 1998-2004, she did a Pharmacy Practice Residency at VA Palo Alto HealthCare System and was subsequently hired on as an Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacists, managing pharmacist-run Anticoagulation, Diabetes, General Medicine, and Endo-Lipid Clinics.  From 2004-2008, she worked for the pharmaceutical industry as a Scientific Affairs Manager for Abbott Laboratories and Johnson & Johnson.  In 2008, Julie focused her efforts on starting MedFolio, LLC.  She built the first prototype at home with pieces of plastic and glue.  She contracted with an engineering firm, Source Scientific LLC, to further design and develop the MedFolio Electronic Pillbox.  It was launched to market in December 2010.

At the time when the initial idea of MedFolio Electronic Pillbox came to be (around 2000), cell phones really were still a novelty and text messaging was unknown.  Therefore the initial concept was for the MedFolio Pillbox to store medications, provide an audio alert, be portable, and have the visual medication identification window.  It was not until the business started in 2008 that we ventured on the idea of having reminder alerts sent by e-mail and text messaging.  Also, the engineers at Source Scientific were the originators of the idea of having an LED lighting reminder system, as I did not have the electronics/circuitry background to conceive that idea.

Very recently, we were awarded “Silver” in the Medication Management division of the 2011 New Product and Technology awards!  It was judged on a point based system, and “Silver” was the top prize given in the Medication Management division.
