I thought of the idea while entertaining friends.  The process to make specialty cocktails was problematic.  First, using the dish was messy and wasteful.  We always threw out a lot of salt/sugar at the end of the night and our kitchen counter and floor always had salt all over the place.  Second, because we were serving several types of cocktails (i.e. lemon drop martinis with sugar and margaritas with salt), we had to have several plates with the salt / sugar etc.  Third, often times, someone would get half-way through their drink and they wanted to add more salt or sugar to the rim because they ran out, there was no way to do this.  Individually these challenges were really just minor inconveniences.  But when combined, the challenges were significant enough to tackle.

While Tim was in business school at MIT, he took a product design and development class and this is where the true development really began.  We began putting together some rudimentary prototypes and worked on this part time while working in our “regular” full time jobs.   During this time, we worked on patents, market research, manufacturing possibilities, funding options … and many, many prototypes.  It turns out that affixing a solid to the rim of a glass in an upright position is no easy feat.  Though The Barmaid may look like a simple device, there is a significant amount of engineering that has gone into it.

Inventor: Holli Bessant

Holli Bessant is the principal inventor of the concept of The Barmaid.  Prior to Lime Tree Cove, Holli was an Account Executive with Thomson Reuters.  Prior to Thomson, Holli held a leadership role with JP Morgan Chase.  Holli holds degrees in Economics and International Affairs from the University of New Hampshire.

The Barmaid can rim anything from a ginormous margarita glass or scorpion bowl, to a miniature shot glass or beer bottle.

We have many comical stories from our live events.  Often times, the hilarity comes with marketing The Barmaid.    We have found that we need to carefully choose our words, as we often find ourselves speaking without thinking and saying things like “get your free rim job,” or “premium rim jobs provided by Lime Tree Cove.”  Certainly, it turned some heads.

**I’m not a huge fan of telling that story, but it is reality.  We just laugh it off now, but people can get pretty creative when it comes to naming and marketing this product.**

EarCoolers™ (patent pending) are 6 ear inserts

(3 pairs). They are made of top 100% highest implantable grade soft/flexible medical materials. Stored in the freezer, EarCoolers™ are meant to offer a soothing cool feeling to comfort for headache and stress. They retain their coolness for about 1 minute and must be exchanged for cooler ones. Each pair will re-cool in 2 minutes if on ice. Thus you may continue exchanging cool pairs for as long as you need to(usually it takes as long as you have waited after onset of the headache) that is why there are 3 pairs.

Use: Store EarCoolers™ in freezer compartment of refrigerator. At onset of headache put plastic baggie from freezer onto a dish of crushed ice and water. Lay down in a dark quiet place if possible. Place one pair of EarCooler™  inserts gently into your ear canals (one in each ear) and relax, when the EarCooler™ inserts are warm (about a minute), put back into baggie (on ice) and exchange for the next cooler set.

You simply rotate the three pairs until you feel comfort. These act as a heat sic taking heat from your head and drawing it outward which it is presumed leaves nerves cooled down.

They are all the same material, but in three colors so you can tell the ones you just used from the cooler ones. I suggest you rotate in order (Ex: Blue, green, white, blue green, white, etc.) that way the warm used ones will have 2 minutes to re-chill.

They are NOT meant to replace any other doctor’s orders, medications or system that you presently use for headaches. They are meant to compliment your existing regime by offering a quick way to cool your headache.

They are completely re-usable. Simply wash in soap and warm water after each use, rinse thoroughly, dry, and replace in baggie and store in FREEZER.

They are also portable for travel in cars, buses, airplanes, anywhere that they can be chilled in a cup of ice water.

If you are prone to ear wax build up, consult with a doctor before use. As with all small items, keep out of reach of children and pets as may be a swallowing hazard.

They have not been FDA tested.

I suffer from Acute Transverse Myelitis, an auto immune disorder and I take a great many medications. I did not want to take additional medications for my ongoing menopausal migraines.

I was having the onset of a bad headache when someone started a lawn mower next to my window. I had an ice pack on my forehead and I was too sick to get up and ask them to leave. So I instinctively put my little fingers into my ear canals to block the sound. My headache disappeared. I had many friends test the cold wet finger method for headache relief (putting their pinkies in to ice water until really cold) and all of them said it worked, but they didn’t like numbing their fingers and didn’t like the “wet” in their ears from the ice.

I then went to a neurologist who specializes in migraines and found that coolness may impact the tri-geminal nerve which is where it is suspected you “feel” migraines and headaches. By cooling down that regional of the skull (near the ear canal) it is suggested that you can back off the nerves from threshold (frenzy and pain) and receive comfort. EarCoolers™ create a mini-hypothermia of sorts in the ear canal.

Next I went to a medical engineer and asked what material would hold ice cold temperatures, but be as soft as flesh? Many prototypes later and much field testing for the right coolness, shape, and softness and EarCooler™ inserts were born.

Inventor: Sally Franz

Sally Franz is an author, artist, media personality, motivational speaker and migraine sufferer. When she discovered a way to lessen the discomfort of migraines, she began to trademark and patent her process. As a grandmother and a lifelong advocate for women, she decided that since a large majority of migraine sufferers were women her age, she would make her findings available to the world. You can follow Sally’s blog at www.BabyBoomerTalkRadio.com

Sally has been primarily marketing EarCoolers™ to women. Why? “When I have had men try them, including male doctors many have reported poor results. Upon further inquiry it was noted that all the men with poor results had decided to change the directions.  Some used only one pair and stopped and did not exchange the pairs several times as directed. Some put only 1 EarCooler™ in one ear thinking they would “save the other plugs for later”, again the directions say one in each ear  (2 at a time)because you have to cool both hemispheres of the brain at the same time. Every male who was given remedial coaching to stop trying to “improve the directions” had success.

“I decided I didn’t have enough marketing money to deal with the male need to short cut or improve the simple method of 2 EarCooler™ inserts at a time exchanging them for cooler ones, over and over to keep the ear canal cool until comfort is reached. And in many families it is the woman who would be shopping for health needs for her family. I decided to let the Moms of the world coach their own family members on the directions.

basic point: EarCoolers are worth the money if they relieve pain. They're reusable and you're not consuming toxins; i bet when you're 'constantly suffering from repeated migraines' you're quick to pick up the meds (which one i bet you're thinking). Ifmore there's a slew of people willing to spend $40 to jazz up their already overpriced sugar filled refreshment, then spend a few dollars on yourself to relieve your pain!!!

I guess it is all relative.. my migraines are so bad I'd pay almost anything for some relief. These things look like they have good potential.

Anything that helps migraines is a plus... the price is a little too high for me though - I suffer from migraines and would love to try these out, but would not pay $40 for the experiment.

I never heard of 'cooling the nerves' but if these work it would be great. But for $39.99 - I will suffer.
