Erik Groset and Robin Defay, the co-founders of Digital Group Audio, are childhood friends and have been passionate consumer electronics users their whole lives. With over 40 million Apple iPhone owners in the world, and millions more iPod owners, the market potential is obvious. Erik and Robin noticed there were a slew of iPhone and iPod speakers available on the market but few of them were capable of taking advantage of all of the iPhone and iPod’s wonderful features.
Two of the key features of the Apple iPhone and iPod touch are their ability to be used anywhere and their ability to be used in both portrait and landscape orientations. Livespeakr was designed with these points in mind and they are reflected in features like the rechargeable battery, rotating cradle for portrait and landscape orientations, and USB charging cable.
Digital Group Audio is based out of Carlsbad, CA, just minutes away from where Erik and Robin grew up. Erik and Robin traveled to China and tested hundreds of different speakers before finding the ones used in the Livespeakr. All the time spent testing was well worth it because we feel the speakers provide the perfect combination of portable size and high quality sound. Livespeakrs are manufactured in Shenzhen, China, a city known for producing all sorts of high quality consumer electronics. The Livespeakrs are shipped to the United States via air and sea and are then distributed to our customers and resellers.
Digital Group Audio was one of five companies nominated for Wired Magazine’s Small Biz Contest. Recently, Business Week declared Digital Group Audio one of America’s most promising start-ups. We hope to continue to build on the good press that Livespeakr has received and are also planning to announce two new products at CES this year.
Inventor: Erik Groset & Robin Defay
The question looms, are you born an entrepreneur or do you become one? In Erik Groset’s case, he is literally a natural born entrepreneur with the bloodlines to prove it. His great-grandfather, John P. Groset, invented and pioneered the ice cream cone-making machine. Hailing from the suburbs of Chicago, Erik began his business ventures early on as a professional Kool-Aid salesman at the ripe age of seven, selling hundreds of dollars worth of Kool-Aid by the gallon to thirsty construction workers. His various business endeavors have evolved over the years including the launch of one of the world’s first websites for selling/trading virtual goods and information within online games.
Erik holds a B.S in Business Administration with an emphasis in High Technical Management from California State University San Marcos. Erik has been honored by being inducted to the Young Inventors Internationals Hall of Fame. In 2007, Erik became the President and Co-founder of Digital Group Audio (DGA). Erik strives to bring innovative products to the market from the perspective of the consumer. When DGA came to fruition, the goal was to create products made by the customer for the customer, an ideal that continues to be exemplified in all products it creates. At only 24 years old, Erik continues to work hard to bring DGA to the top despite the tough economic climate.
Robin Defay:
25-year old Robin DeFay spent five years of his life as a professional poker player, a career that only strengthened his roots as an independent business investor. From a young age, Robin pursued a variety of different business ventures ranging from car washing businesses and virtual goods sales, all the way to the business of diamonds. He has taken Digital Group Audio to new heights by developing meaningful relationships with key industry professionals, a skill which he owes to his experience from his poker days and learning how to read and cooperate with people. Using these unique skills, Robin works hard to surround the company with fresh, intelligent and resourceful employees and affiliates that are aligned with the DGA mentality. Attending California State University San Marcos only fueled his lifelong desires to be an entrepreneur and led him to where he is today, co-founder of Digital Group Audio (DGA).
After a long day at the office, the team here at DGA likes to wind down by throwing the old pigskin around. The current record is 119 consecutive passes without a drop (we shoot to set a record each week).
When we first moved into our new office, there was a small problem as to who would get to select their private office first, Erik or Robin. The dilemma was ultimately solved by a "good old-fashioned foot race". The initial race was held on asphalt but the results were so close that a true winner could not be determined. A second race was held later that day on grass and Robin dived head first across the finish line for a narrow victory.
