Cut Costs or Bring Value (12 of 16 Keys to Success)

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

In whatever task you take on if you can cut expenses and save a company money you instantly become twice as valuable.  On the reverse if you can find something that causes the company to earn more revenue and increase it’s value you become three times as valuable.  Train yourself to look for ways to save money or increase value and you will be successful and invaluable to any corporation or start-up.

What a simplistic idea!  Save money or bring more money in and you are more valuable.  As simplistic as this obvious statement is, did you know the vast majority of employees don’t think this way?  Most employees see their job as a basic function or cog in the wheel, when at the root of it your job exits to either save money or bring in more revenue.  At the point your job ceases to do one or both of those functions, that is the day your job will also cease to exit.  Start looking at your job and work though the important lense of profit and loss and you’ll be in an invaluable success.   You’ll also find the way you work and how you perform will have a pleasant and unexpected paradigm shift.

Own It! (Be the Best!) – (2 of 16 Keys to Success)

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010
No matter what you do if you are the best at it you will be valued.  No matter the task, big or small, if you become the best you will not only feel good about what you do for a living, but you will be valued.  With value comes extra income, perks, and promotions.  Most people just want to get the work done; achievers always try to outdo what they did the day before.

The cynic might say, “How can I be the best at paperwork?” Or “How can I be the best at answering the phone?” Or “Packing a Box?”  The answer is:  All these tasks appear to be mundane, but even the most routine and mundane job functions allow room for you to OWN IT!  If you truly feel your job can’t be OWNED, then you better find another line of work because you’ll be replaced with a machine or foreign labor!  Seriously, every position allows you to be GREAT.  The truth is most people don’t want to be great.  They want to do the same old with the least amount of over-exertion or effort as possible.  Don’t let that be you and if it is change!  Find a way to do paperwork better, pack boxes faster, answer the phone with more charm.  Get so good that you are not just the go to person, but you are also the person most respected and sought after for advice.  Being this type of person is an admirable life.  Anyone can slink by and just complete a job.  Avoid being ‘anyone’ and OWN IT.

The power of POSITIVE thinking

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Hi! My name is Debbie Oser, founder of Keeping it Positive.  Our company was started, and is still growing, on the mindset of thinking POSITIVE, and never giving up!

I started Keeping it Positive after an experience I had with my older son… The summer of 2007, I started saying Positive Affirmations to my two sons every night (then 3 and 5), hoping to give them the Confidence and Self-Assurance they need as they go through school, making friends, learning and doing activities, etc!

I wasn’t sure the affirmations were “sinking in”… until one day at the playground, when my older son stopped me from helping him  by saying, “No, Mom, I don’t need you… I can do anything I put my mind to!”

I was so excited to hear that the Affirmations we had been saying every night were truly making him more confident, that I wanted to spread this Positive message to ALL kids, and adults, everywhere… and Keeping it Positive was born!

I had decided that my first product was going to be a Pillowcase with Positive Affirmations, as it’s right there when you go to bed, and wake up, and contains ALL the Confidence-Building Affirmations right on the product in front of you, not only to see and touch, but to mentally say everyday.

In trying to start this business, and actually create a product… I had researched companies and called people for what seemed like forever! These lists of people that I would talk to were not always so encouraging and positive.  And though, mentally draining… I was determined to succeed, and continued this researching quest! To find the right material Pillowcases I was looking for was surprisingly very difficult. And many of the screen printers that I had spoken to about printing the affirmations onto the Pillowcases would tell me that it couldn’t be done in the size and colors that I needed!

I knew that I was NOT giving up, and if these people couldn’t do the job for me… then I would keep calling until I found someone who COULD! And sure enough, after months of time, energy and focus… I DID find the Pillowcases, and the right screen printer who said “yes”… and I finally had my product – my Pleasant Dreamz Positive Affirmation Pillowcases!

Another obstacle in this process was to try to keep “nay-sayers” at a distance… not everyone encourages you to pursue your “dream,” or try to start a business.  And no matter who is telling you not to do something, or you can’t do it, or just to give up… you MUST always tell yourself to ignore these negative thoughts/people, and you must be your own biggest supporter! This is exactly what I did with my own daily affirmations… and it worked, and still works to this day!

Our goal with these products is to have ALL children, and adults, know that if they BELIEVE in themselves, and KNOW that they CAN do it… they WILL Succeed at anything they put their mind to!

Everybody could benefit from a daily “dose” of confidence, and encouragement… and we truly do believe whatever we tell ourselves… so make sure it’s POSITIVE!

SEE it, SAY it, BELIEVE it…. and it WILL happen!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Just thought I’d share this insightful and inspiring message once spoken by Mother Teresa of Calcutta.  Enjoy your Christmas day with your family and friends as well as the upcoming new year.  Hoping 2010 will be your most gratifying year yet!!

THE FINAL ANALYSIS

People are often unreasonable, illogical

and self-centered.

Forgive them anyway,

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish,

ulterior motives;

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends

and some true enemies;

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;

Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building,

someone may destroy overnight;

Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, People will forget tomorrow;

Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have,

and it may never be enough;

Give the world the best you have anyway.

You see, in the final analysis,

it is all between you and God;

It was never between you and them anyway.

Entrepreneurship can be an Emotional Roller Coaster

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Entrepreneurship can be an emotional roller coaster.  However, much like life itself, if you develop the right relationships, it is reassuring and comforting to know that you are not heading out on the journey alone (unless you’re a jerk).

Share your enthusiasm and sell your vision to friends and family.  It can be infectious (but not in an H1N1 kind of way).

At first, you may feel like you are the only person who sees the “brilliance” of what you are creating.  And that’s ok.  Just remember that your enthusiasm is infections. If you wear your heart on your sleeve, others may not fully grasp your vision, but they will sense that something is brewing and will become your biggest supporters and most effective marketers.

Having access to individuals whose opinions you respect is also particularly important early on as you work through issues in your business plan and strategy. Realistically, you are going to spend many hours in your own head working through issues…however, sometimes the only way to make sense of the mess is by informally talking it out with friends or family.

More importantly, there may come a time when you experience self doubt (I didn’t think it would happen…but it does).  When it appears the walls are caving in around you, it’s reassuring to have cheerleaders who believe in what you’re doing and provide the right amount of encouragement to see you over the hump (conversely, it’s also good to have people around you who can help keep you grounded if/when delusions creep into your head).

There’s value in lessons learned first hand…but sometimes free lessons are better.

Unless you are a complete narcissist, you will realize quickly that you don’t have all of the answers….quite frankly, there are times when you won’t even know what questions to ask.  This can be particularly daunting if you are launching something on your own.  However, developing relationships with mentors and advisers is an easy and effective way to tap a knowledge base of practical options and solutions.

Ultimately your journey will be unique and individualized, yet at the core, there are situations all entrepreneurs have encountered (setting up loans and financing, dealing with an unreliable supplier, a challenging customer, a printer that jams at inopportune times).  I learned early on that small business owners and operators across different industries deal with similar issues on a regular basis.

Write (don’t type) everything down.

You will find that what you are creating becomes your life…you will eat, sleep and urinate your business.  There will be times when ideas in your head are being generated rapidly.  If you have a thought that gets your heart and mind racing, write it down….if it is important enough, and you obsess enough, something will come of it.  If you have a random thought that you can’t remember a few hours later…it will irritate you like an itch you can’t scratch.  It’s also good to keep a log where you can write and sketch out your plans, and to take notes during meetings. I’m on my 4th journal in the past year and can see how my thoughts and entries have evolved. Every so often I do a scan through the journals to see if there is anything I felt was brilliant…and might work at this time.

Net-net… .

Too many chefs will spoil the dish…but having relationships (both personal and professional) with mentors and complementary advisors is crucial when venturing into uncharted territory.  I’m not suggesting that if you are starting a dot com (like me), that you should seek out Mark Zuckerberg or Bill Gates for periodic chats or coffee…it’s not going to happen.  However, look around at your network for support.  Your friends, family, the guy who runs the Starbucks where you now hold most of your meetings are usually happy to provide advice and direction.  After all, experiences are best when they are shared.

Why God shouldn’t be Politically Incorrect.

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

One aspect of business that has always fascinated me is the role God plays in the lives of entrepreneurs.  What’s apparent is that there is an abundance of inventors and entrepreneurs that believe their concepts, ideas and business all owe God the credit.  What is more interesting is how little this is made known to the general public.   It seems that those entrepreneurs that hold a strong faith in God often only insinuate His role in the process.  I am not just talking about fellow inventors on Yak About It or other business people I have met along the way, I am also referring to myself.  I truly believe my given talents, drive, people I have been blessed to meet and business situations were all guided by God’s hand.  I have had the free will to use my talents, meet great people or take an opportunity, but it is the presence of these sources that point to the fact God must be present.  There are so many occurrences in my life and business that I would have never even prayed for, yet they occurred and I am FAR better off because of these happenings.  The glory should be given to God.

This all leads me back to the question of :                                                                                      ”Why is God (or discussing God) politically incorrect?  Why does it offend or turn people off?

1.) Perhaps it is politically incorrect because we are so afraid of alienating those who don’t believe in God.  This I feel might be the worst reason of all.  For those who don’t believe in God I certainly don’t want to hold up against a wall and force them to accept God, but it is these very people I hope to reach with my message of God’s power in our everyday lives.  It is for those that don’t believe that hearing of God’s work is most important. Once again it’s not about forcing a belief, but rather not being afraid to share the strength God has provided in our everyday lives.

2.) Perhaps it is politically incorrect because those that hear you talk of God think that you feel you are better or ’special’.  Of course if people who did mention or credit God really felt they were better or ‘special’ that would be disturbing, but perhaps in general maybe people get turned off because that is how they want to view those who speak of faith.   This reason could be the unfortunate truth that a few spoiled it for the whole.  I hope this is not the case and that this reason for offending can be set aside.

3.) Perhaps it is politically incorrect because many people feel giving God the credit is a cop out.  If God is present in everything then giving Him the credit for certain entrepreneurial happenings is a ‘lame’ answer.  A good friend of mine who happens to be atheist once said when I asked him where he turns for guidance in his business troubles, “I say self, let’s do this,.. ‘self’ what do I need to do?.. and before I know it ‘self’ comes up with a solution”.  I think it could be considered more ‘lame’ that ’self’ or our own great genius is what guides us in business.  I think God’s role is often clear and should be more politically correct than how great or how smart any one person thinks they are.

Perhaps the real subconscious reasons as to why God’s role in our inventions, business and entrepreneurial efforts remains a quieter secret will never be known, but I hope that it can be a more free and accepted topic as the world evolves.

My last take on this topic is that just like anything it can be over-done.  No one wants to hear how God helps you email.  The other side of it is that their are steps in the entrepreneurial journey that others can learn from so while giving God credit is good we must provide the business content for others to reap the rewards of mistakes and successes of our past entrepreneurial ventures.

To become a successful entrepreneur you need an idea, a strong will, and some luck.

Friday, October 30th, 2009

When you believe in your idea full heartedly and have the motivation and perseverance to make it a reality, you’re also creating your own luck along the way. That’s been our story from the start. Here is what we learned along the way:

Outside your box: Up and coming entrepreneurs often start looking at their skill set and then think of a new idea for a business based on these “skills”. An accountant may consider starting an accounting company, someone who happens to be good with cars may open up their own garage… My advice would be to consider thinking outside this skill set “box”. Two of the co-founders of our company, Tweble.com specialize in Finance & Accounting and are soon to be Chartered Accountants. Just because you’re good at something doesn’t stop you from thinking of a unique idea outside your field. Bringing an outside perspective into a new domain has often led to many innovative ideas out there!

Act: Ideas are a dime a dozen but having someone act on their idea is the difference between an entrepreneur and someone who witnesses their idea online and says “Oh man, I told you this would work, that’s my idea!” The key is to act, act fast, act strong and stay the course despite the numerous obstacles in your way. You convinced yourself this idea would work for a reason…

Attack: So now that you’re sitting there with an idea that you should have had “no business” pursuing in the first place, it’s time to attack. We put out ads in the local listings to find a highly skilled programmer that would be willing to help us. Just like most young entrepreneurs; we were reluctant to pay out of our pocket for an idea which we were not even sure was possible! As a result, we started looking for a partner rather than an employee. After interviewing about 10 candidates, we found our man. Remember that luck I was referring to…? He also happened to have a team of highly skilled programmers ready to help us in China.

Time management: If you have school, work, and/or other responsibilities, making time for a project you’re not even sure will work is probably one of the tougher obstacles a new entrepreneur will face. But if you believe in your project enough, you will find time for it, I promise. Unfortunately, my friends, family & girlfriend at the time, had to witness my disappearance for a year -> but you have to be willing to make sacrifices to follow through on your dream. Besides, if they truly love you, they will understand.

Interns: In this tough economy, there are workers out there that would be willing to take a pay cut in order to get a job. Or even better, there are people out there that just might believe in the project as much as you do and be willing to work for free! The learning experience and the chance to be part of something big from the grass roots level is sometimes enough to have someone as motivated as you are to help. But don’t forget to award them once the company takes off!

Today, we are receiving advice and support from a very prominent ex-CEO of a couple of large IT companies. How did we meet him? To become a successful entrepreneur you need an idea, a strong will, and some luck.

What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

My older brother asked me that question at the start of my entrepreneurial journey and it’s stuck with me the whole way. It’s been a long road so far with setbacks and times where you fundamentally doubt whether the path you are taking is the correct one but that single question seems to make everything easier and more manageable; clearer and finer focused; far more creative and really…just downright more fun.

Think about it. What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?

I’ve learnt to keep the sentiment behind that question fresh in my mind and it has opened doors for me and given me the confidence to do things I otherwise may not have done. It also eases the long nights spent (and there will be many long nights!) trying to get things just right.

I’ve also learnt the value of talking to anyone and everyone that will listen about your idea, product, startup or business. People are generally helpful and if you are thoroughly excited about your idea they will inherently want it to succeed themselves. You will find all sorts of people come out of the woodwork with ideas and offers to make what you’re doing work.

Have you always been interested in something but couldn’t picture what success would be like? Are you stuck in a job you hate but have a passion for something else? Do you have vast knowledge about a subject or hobby that sets you apart from others?

Do you know what you would do if you couldn’t fail?

About: Photoswarm is the answer to the above questions for me. I’ve always been keen on photography and wanted to offer users photo website that is slick, simple, social and gives pro users their own www.yourname.com domain name with a minimum of technical knowledge. You can try one out for free! www.photoswarm.com

Story: Will Jennings is an electrician and keen photographer and his business partner Aidan is a web developer. They both were not really happy with what the market was offering as far as photo websites as they felt there wasn’t anything that made it simple and seamless to obtain your own www.yourname.com domain name (URL) so they decided to take the entrepreneurial route and build something themselves.  Like all entrepreneurs the process has included long nights and early mornings, but the thrills of bringing to life an original concept has been worth every second.

What Makes a GREAT Invention?

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Can you spot an amazing invention when you see one?

My bet would be placed on the side of:  You Can’t.  Don’t take it personally because if everyone was an invention expert only the very best products would be produced.  The problem is that which captures the public’s attention can never be fully understood.  Take for instance these inventions:  The Topsy Tail, Thigh Master, Flowbee and the Snuggie.  They were all a smashing success!  …Really?!?   Thinking present day it is hard to believe, but it’s true.

If you look at these products what makes them better than featured products you see on Yak About It?

flowbee thigh-master snuggie topsytail

The Answer:  Nothing

What made them better was that they captured the public’s attention. Is the Flowbee a better way to cut hair? The Thigh-Master the best way for toned thighs? The Snuggie the best way to stay warm? Or the Topsy-Tail the best way to create a hairstyle?  I think everyone would agree that the answer to all those questions is: NO.  However, once people saw or purchased these products they couldn’t help but tell everyone they knew. Basically these inventions were all Yak’d About and that is what propelled them to fame and fortune.

What has to be understood is that a product doesn’t become Yakable by necessarily being ‘better’.  What makes a new product succeed comes down to an ‘IT’ factor.  It’s often a factor that cannot often be explained or controlled.  For this reason there will always be creative inventors hoping their product idea can serve a need and perhaps more importantly capture everyone’s interest and enjoyment.

To all those entrepreneurial minds I wish you the best and I hope your first or latest invention is able to bring personal success and usefulness for all.
